The Michigan
bred programs provides, from the Department of Agriculture,
funding of purse revenue for horses that qualify as a
Michigan bred. These funds are budgeted by the
Legislature. A Michigan bred must be foaled in the
State of Michigan and registered with the Department of
Agriculture. The funded races must take place in
Michigan.
Restricted Races: A restricted Michigan bred
race is only for Michigan breds and the purse is
supplemented by Department of Agriculture funding.
These races generally allow for Michigan breds to be more
competitive and to run for increased purses. Special
Stakes races (approx. 20) occur throughout the year where
the purse level will approach $50,000.00.
Breeder's Awards: This program offers the
breeder of a race winner at least 10% of the gross purse.
Depending on how many winners a breeders has can produce a
significant amount of award revenue throughout the year.
Owners Awards: This program offers additional
funds to an owner of a Michigan bred that runs 1st, 2nd or
3rd in a race that is not restricted to Michigan breds.
These are called "open" races.
Sire
Stakes: The Sire Stakes program represents six
(6) races valued at approximately $100,000.00 each.
This program is for horses that are sired by stallions that
stand in Michigan, but are not necessarily Michigan breds.
